High pressure system halts Tony Bullimore's impending departure for a week.
Monday, 23 April 2007

A large High pressure system camped south of Tasmania has halted any hopes Tony Bullimore had of setting out on the Blue Ocean Wireless Round the World Challenge this week.

"It is very frustrating"  the British circumnavigator said today. "We had hoped for a weather window opening on Tuesday or Wednesday, but this High is blocking the steady winds I need to carry 'Doha' south of New Zealand and into the Southern Ocean."

Lee Bruce, Team Bullimore's weather guru sees a possible opening on May 2 when a NE wind could build from 10 to 25 knots off Tasmania, to provide the right conditions to slingshot Bullimore's 102ft catamaran 'Doha' off towards Cape Horn.

Bullimore and a crew of keen Tasmanian multihull sailors took 'Doha' for a short sail on Saturday, then worked on Sunday to top-up fuel, add the last of Tony's food supplies, and give 'Doha's INMARSAT communication systems a final check. The 68 year old yachtsman is now ready to leave the moment there is a favourable break in the weather.
